Freyhof, Huskers Finish Second at Greeno/Dirksen Invite

Erika Freyhof finished second with a time of 17:07.3 at the Greeno/Dirksen Invite on Saturday morning. Nebraska co-hosted the meet with Nebraska Wesleyan for its lone home meet of the season at Mahoney Golf Course. The Nebraska women placed second with 41 points while the Husker men finished fourth in the team standings with 106 points.

Freyhof’s second-place performance is her second consecutive top-five finish at the Greeno/Dirksen Invite after placing fifth in 2019.

Grace Pagone and Hannah Godwin also finished in the top-10 for the Big Red, with Pagone placing fourth (17:29.5) and Godwin clocking a 17:42.8 to finish 10th. Taya Skelton was the next Husker to cross the finish line with a time of 18:00.1 to place 18th. Jacquelyn Abanses rounded out the scoring for Nebraska with a 19th-place finish and time of 18:02.5.

“I thought the women ran well this morning,” said head coach Matt Wackerly. “Almost to a person, we  ran faster on a harder course today than a couple weeks ago at the Augustana Twilight. Erika and Grace give us an excellent 1-2 up front and our freshmen keep getting better each week.”

Ryan Martins led the Big Red men, placing ninth with a time of 24:25.4. Mark Freyhof posted a time of 25:03.9 to finish 27th. Bailey Timmons covered the course in 25:43.9 to finish 46th, followed by Brian Beach in 49th-place with a time of 25:47.5. Ryan Eastman placed 53rd and crossed the finish line with a time of 25:53.1.

“The men were better, but we are not where we need to be yet,” added Wackerly. “Ryan ran a smart race up front, and I was happy with his effort. We will continue to improve and look forward to our next race in a couple weeks.”

Nebraska is off next weekend and returns to action at the Chile Pepper Festival hosted by Arkansas on Friday, Oct. 1 in Fayetteville, Ark.
