Australia Advances at Asia Cup

Australia advanced to the championship bracket at the FIBA Asia Cup on Thursday with a 72-61 victory over New Zealand in Amman, Jordan.

The win over New Zealand moved the Opals into the tournament semifinals, where they will meet Japan on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 6:50 a.m. (CT) with live video provided to subscribers of ESPN+.

A win for Australia against Japan would move the Opals into the championship game to face either China or Korea on Sunday, Oct. 3.

Nebraska’s Jaz Shelley did not play in Thursday’s win over New Zealand after competing in the first three games of the Asia Cup for the Opals. Shelley is the lone collegian on the Australian National Team in the tournament.

Through Australia’s first three games, Shelley totaled 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocked shots. She hit 6-of-12 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 three-pointers, while committing just two turnovers in more than 46 minutes of action.
