Whitish, Cain earn weekly Big Ten honors

Nebraska sophomore guard Hannah Whitish was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday. Freshman center Kate Cain also received her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor this season.

Whitish averaged 29 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2.5 steals in Nebraska’s last two games to lead the Huskers to road wins over Kansas (66-49) on Wednesday and Drake (89-85 2 OT) on Saturday.

Whitish’s assist-to-turnover ratio this year is now 2.6-to-1. She’s also averaging 12.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, a team-best 5.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game.

Defensively, Cain blocked nine total shots in Nebraska’s last two games. She’s now blocked 34 shots this year, which is already the third most in a single season by any freshman in NU history.

Cain averages 3.4 blocks per contest, which is the third highest average in the country. She’s also been getting it done offensively, shooting a team-best 59 percent from the field. Against Drake, Cain notched her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Her season averages are up to 10.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

The 7-3 Huskers are inactive this week due to final exams, but are back in action on Sunday when they travel to San Jose State. Tip-off for that game is set for 2 p.m.
