Property Tax Relief Initiative Petition Effort Is Proposed

An initiative petition property tax proposal is in the works. State Senator Steve Erdman tells KLIN’s Coby Mach on Drive Time Lincoln that the proposal is aimed at reducing the local school property tax load by up to fifty percent.

Erdman says that he thinks the state could come up with the over one billion dollars in property tax relief by eliminating some exemptions to the state sales tax and by cutting back on the tax exemptions that encourage businesses to relocate to Nebraska. Erdman says the proposal is supported by a number of farm organizations.

If the petition drive is successful…the issue would be on the general election ballot in November of 2018.
