Mike Riley joins Oregon State coaching staff

Mike Riley is returning to his hometown of Corvallis, OR to serve as an assistant coach at Oregon State. He was fired from Nebraska on Nov. 25.

Mike Riley is back in coaching as an assistant at Oregon State.

Riley will serve as an assistant under head coach Jonathan Smith, but his exact position has yet to be determined. Riley coached Smith as a quarterback at Oregon State in 1997.

Riley is the winningest head coach in Oregon State’s history, compiling a 93-80 record in 14 combined years with the Beavers. He coached Oregon State in two different stints, from 1997-1998 and again from 2003-2014.

Riley went 19-19 in this three year tenure at Nebraska.

In addition, Oregon State also hired Dave Van De Reit as director of football operations. The Oregonian reports that Trent Bray is expected to join Oregon State’s staff, too, though his role remains unclear. Bray coached linebackers at Nebraska for the past three seasons, and also served as the interim head coach until Scott Frost was brought in on Dec. 2.

Riley was fired from Nebraska on Nov. 25. He’s due $6.6 million for the 39 months remaining on his contract, which is a monthly tab of about $175,000.
