Jurgens to Miss a Month and Frost Talks Transfers

Scott Frost revealed in his post practice press conference on Thursday that Cam Jurgens had broken a bone in his foot and will be out for approximately one month.

“He just got his cleat caught in the grass and broke a metatarsal in his foot,” Frost said. The news still comes as a blow to this team, despite the fact that Jurgens was unlikely to see much playing time this season.

Frost made the announcement on Monday that the freshman from Beatrice, Nebraska would switch from tight end to start preparation to play at either guard or center.

Jurgens will presumably be able to return to practice before the season is over, but with the likelihood of Nebraska making a bowl game a near impossibility, Jurgens will miss out on key development time.

Depth is hugely important, especially to a young team like Nebraska. The Huskers not only have to deal with injuries, but they’ve also lost multiple players to transfers, including Tyjon Lindsey and Greg Bell who transferred just last week.

Frost explained that the NCAA’s new transfer rules disproportionately benefit schools that are on the quarter system, rather than the semester system like Nebraska.

“Right now, with the way the transfer rule is, the quarter teams are at an advantage,” Frost said. “We couldn’t get a player to transfer here a week before the season started. Some of these quarter teams are still taking them [players].”

Tyjon Lindsey, Avery Roberts and Tristan Gebbia, all former Husker players, transferred to Oregon State, a school on the quarter system. That’s one of the reasons why Bell was blocked by Nebraska from transferring to Oregon State.

“I hope it doesn’t become the Wild West [like] in college basketball with everybody transferring,” Frost said. “We’re all going to figure out how it looks and do the best with what we have.”

Nebraska’s next game will be in Evanston, Illinois, taking on Northwestern at 11 A.M. this Saturday.
