Huskers Gear Up for Big Ten Play

Lincoln – The Nebraska football team practiced for approximately two hours on Wednesday inside the Hawks Championship Center.

Following practice, Offensive Coordinator Troy Walters met with the media and was asked about the health status of freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez, who missed the Troy game last week with an injury.

“(Adrian is) making progress,” Walters said. “He looks better and better every day, so we’ll see come Saturday what his status is, how he’s feeling. We’re going to make the best decision with the team in mind and our future in mind. We’ll see where that goes, but he’s making progress each day.”

Walters then talked about the importance of Martinez being recovered before the staff puts him back out on the field.

“We want to make sure (Martinez is) healthy,” Walters said. “We want to make sure he’s close to 100 percent. We’re going against a good defense, they fly around, they’re physical. So we don’t want to put him in any harm or any danger. He’s got to be able to make all the throws and all of the runs and things of that nature. We’ll take our time and make sure he’s healthy and gives us the best chance to win.”

One opposing player Walters said Nebraska must be aware of on Saturday is Michigan’s junior linebacker Devin Bush.

“(Devin Bush has) everything,” Walters said. “Fast. Physical. Explosive. Smart. He knows exactly, based on formations, what you are going to run. He plays with relentless effort. He’s always around the ball. He’s physical. We have to make sure that we have a hat on him and he’s accounted for. He does a great job.”

Walters, who also coaches the Husker receivers, talked about the progress of that group, which is led by sophomore JD Spielman and senior Stanley Morgan Jr., who ranked first and second, respectively, in receiving yards per game during the 2017 Big Ten Conference season.

“We know what those guys can do,” Walter said of Spielman and Morgan. “We need some other guys to step up their game and contribute and help oput. We didn’t play a whole lot of guys the last two games. But that has to change. We’re wearing JD (Spielman) and (Stanley Morgan Jr.) out. We have to make sure we play other guys, and they practiced well this week.

“(Jaron) Woodyard has practiced well and Andre Hunt, even (Jaevon) McQuitty. We’ve got to make sure we have a good rotation so we don’t wear guys out. I think the last game in the fourth quarter, JD was tired and didn’t have the legs he would’ve had if we would’ve rotated some guys. We have to make sure we keep those guys fresh.”

Nebraska travels to Michigan for the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. CT.
